Lionel Messi wins the Ballon D’or again, this the first time any player has won the World Player of the Year award for the fourth time breaking his previous record of winning it three times in a row.
Cristiano Ronaldo came second with 23.7% of the votes and Andrés Iniesta was third with 10.9%, but it was Messi who came in with 41.6% of the votes to take the title again. Not surprising when you consider that Messi scored 91 goals in just 69 games.
Ballon D’or replaced the old European Footballer of the Year and the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1991. Amazingly Pelé or Diego Maradona never won the trophy in the past, but it is doubtful they would have matched Lionel Messi’s wonderful achievement.
In these times of austerity it would be wonderful to be so successful and to have the whole world at your feet, but not all of us are so lucky!
