Playing golf and earning £31,000 a day for the next five years. Yes it’s true; Rory Mcllroy has been unveiled as Nike’s new brand ambassador making him one of the highest paid sports stars in the world.
The exact detail of the sponsorship is unsure, but it is reported to be worth around £62 million to £77 million over five years.
The 23year old from Holywood, County Down is currently number one in the golfing world rankings, Tiger Woods was previously the standard-bearer for Nike, but Rory now takes over that position as number one in the world.
Mind you it’s not as though he needs the money, last year he won $12 million – $15 million in prize money, and the likable youngster said “I feel very fortunate to be playing a sport in which the monetary rewards are so high, but for me it’s not about the money. I have always dreamt of playing golf simply to win big tournaments”.
However in his first competitive round of golf at the HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship last week he has missed the cut with 6+ playing with his new Nike clubs, but I get the feeling that once he gets used to these clubs 2013 could be an even more successful year for the youngster.
